He is a laparoscopic surgeon and a male infertility specialist, while she is a gynaecologist and obstetrician, as well as an infertility and IVF specialist. A husband and wife duo, perfectly matched to embark upon an ambitious project like Jeevan Jyoti Group of Hospitals and Institutions at Allahabad, Dr Ashwini Kumar Bansal and Dr Vandana Bansal today are a source of inspiration to those who choose to dream. "From a 20-bed small hospital to a 500-bed multi-speciality unit, now even a group, it has been a long and arduous journey of over 20 years. I have never let anything come in the way of my service towards society," says Ashwini. To this Vandana adds, "My patients have been a source of inspiration to me. They have given me the happiest moments of my life, while we in turn give them their best moments without any discrimination of caste, creed or class." True, as one could see in the general activity at the hospital, that comprised a rush of patients from varying social strata, a fact corroborated by Ashwini's remark, "The richest of rich and poorest of poor trust us for providing quality health services at a reasonable expenditure," adding with evident pride, "Vandana and I are the best team we could ever have."

Having launched the first test tube baby centre in Uttar Pradesh, Arpit Test Tube Baby Centre in the year 1992, Jeevan Jyoti is a notch above others for the first test tube baby twins as well as triplets. More than 2,500 childless couples have benefited so far. Despite innumerable national and international awards, besides the Rashtriya Rattan Award, neatly tucked away, Vandana is full of humility. "I believe life is made up of a pre-decided plot that the Creator has authored. It was predestined that I would be a doctor. I had never planned it that way, it just happened. Same goes for me becoming an IVF specialist. It was again a matter of chance that I went abroad and trained on the technical aspects of IVF." Her sense of achievement shines through her statement when she follows this up with, "It feels great to see people go away from the clinic with a smile on their face and a baby in their arms." Such is the faith of her patients in her efforts, that when one case ended in failure, it was the couple who took the blame, for not following the entire procedure, she recalls, her face lighting up with a smile.

At the moment Vandana is pursuing research on the role of Laser Assisted Hatching in improving implantation in In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) from Motilal Nehru Medical College in Allahabad University. It was on an invitation from the European Society of Assisted Reproduction that she visited Amsterdam. "I have patients coming to me from all over India and even abroad. My plan is to start a Corporate Hospital and convert Jeevan Jyoti Hospital into a fully charitable affair," is a sort of an announcement from her end that is bound to make people sit up and look at them with more interest.
