It is difficult to believe that the softspoken, diminutive lady in front of us, is that very Dr Indu Singh, who is much revered in Varanasi for bringing a smile to the faces of numerous childless couples. The Surya Meditech IVF Clinic and Apollo Clinic today stands tall among IVF clinics of the state for tirelessly working towards gifting the one most precious thing to more than 5,000 couples, who would otherwise remain issueless. Their very own child! Somewhere deep down, while interacting with her we find she is first a woman and a mother, the two roles that come naturally to her and those that perhaps also assist her in her profession.
It is the same qualities of understanding, compassion and perseverance with which she handles both her personal and professional goals and have made her come up trumps. So it was not surprising that she listed three memorable moments of her life when asked to mention one. "Not one, there are three," she beamed. "The first IVF baby born in our clinic was one of them … I can't describe how important it was to all of us. Second was seeing my elder daughter Tanvi get married to Amit and third was me becoming a grandmom to Ansh, my grandson!" The look on her face is one of contentment that comes when one finds things falling into place after years of hard work.
"I got married to Arun when I was still doing my MBBS and since then he has been my ultimate support. He is a gem of a person ," Indu confides. An engineer and a builder, Arun too has a first to his credit and that is the first multistorey building of Varanasi. While it is Indu who handles the hospital and the staff, meticulously detailing all infrastructure requirements and maintenance, one can see a visibly strong imprint of Arun's involvement in the project too, with the interiors emerging as ideal facilitators and service providers for the patients as well as all of those engaged in the various processes of the hospital.
Predictably so, when asked to talk about her passions, it is her love for children that stands above the rest. "She loves spending time with the children of our family and there are nineteen in our joint family set up," says Toolika, her younger daughter, grinning from ear to ear as she recalls the many summer vacations when they got together and virtually had a summer camp of sorts. With the kids having the time of their life, usually the elders too joined in. "My mom is a great kathak dancer too," she chips in, her face flooded with memories. In fact Indu is a cooking enthusiast, churning out mouthwatering dishes, in between keeping a tab on the wards at the hospital.
When it is Arun's turn to talk about his wife, his narration tells you how much he respects her for her expertise in handling multifarious activities with similar ease. "Indu is socially active, also taking care of our ancestral girls' school in our village. She is the one today taking total care of the movement that was started years back by my family, to impart education to the girl child from the deprived sections of society, in order to make them self-dependant," he informs with a hint of pride in his voice. In addition to this, she has the distinction of becoming the first woman President of The Rotary Club of Varanasi, where she is known to be a great speaker and an even better singer. Well, well this lady is sure a bundle of talents.
