A multi-faceted personality, is how best one can describe Dr Atul Krishna. A reputed surgeon of North India, it is indeed no small wonder that he is also a prolific writer, one who has actually authored books and that too those with narratives based on incidents sourced from life experiences. It is with this dynamism that he has forged ahead to today stand proud and beaming as the Subharti University he founded transforms into a mini-empire. Starting with Subharti Institute of Medical Sciences, to Subharti Higher Education Group, Guru Gobind Singh Subharti Dental College, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Subharti Medical College, Subharti Institute of Technology and Engineering, Panna Dhai Maa Subharti Nursing College, Jyoti Rao Phulle Subharti Physiotherapy College. Sardar Patel Subharti Institute of Law and Subharti College of Management and Information Technology and B. Ed. the list spans an amazing range of disciplines. A fully equipped university with over 5,000 students, the Subharti Hospital, part of the campus, is one of the most acclaimed in Meerut. So when he says, "I have only one desire. I want to make Subharti the Oxford of India," one cannot help but sit up and take notice. It is but obvious that when Atul says something, he means it too, so perhaps we will be witness to the ultimate culmination of the revolution he started some years back.
His wife Dr Mukti Bhatnagar, President of the organization, lends her charisma and aura to every nook and corner of the campus. Other than administering, guiding, planning, incredible as it may sound, she has also contributed some magnificent paintings to make the corridors look vibrant and come alive in a burst of colours. That she is a dancer and singer too, makes us truly wonder at the storehouse of talent. When she says, "A woman is a mother first. I am the mother of the three children that I have borne and also to the thousands of students who come to our university," one can very well gauge the kind of sentiments this specialised entrepreneur attaches to the people associated with her work.
Further her statement, "I would never want them to feel they are away from home," strengthens our belief in her complete involvement with the bouquet of Subharti institutions. Prioritising between her private and professional life, Dr Mukti left her practice for ten years to be with her children during their formative years, at her maternal home in Allahabad. "I cherish the time spent with Nanima and thank my mother for this," says their daughter Krishna. The way the conversation flowed from here, it was very evident that all three children bond very strongly with the parents. Daughter Shalya Raaj, following the footsteps of the parents, is a dental surgeon, teaching at Subharti Dental College. "Seeing our children now makes me very proud of my decision," says Mukti with satisfaction, as she sees them settle down to one or other vocation one by one.
